What do women want?
Kathy and I have been living together for nearly 30 years. Now you would think after all this time I would have a pretty good idea what she was thinking. ...

Personality
When Kathy and I began remodeling our 127-year-old house, I promised her I would have it done "within a year, tops." After all, I had more than a dozen years experience in the construction business. "Trust me. I know what I'm doing," I assured her - and I really meant it. ...

Out of touch?
Remember that guy you went to high school with who was the smartest kid in the class, but he didn't have the common sense that God gave a crowbar. Ever wonder what happened to him? I think I know. He's working on government-funded research projects. ...

Not what it used to be
Being a Good Samaritan just ain't what it used to be. ...

The Taiwan method
The one thing a woman wants most from a man is what he can't give her - emotions. ...

You'll love it!
Although all parents say we love the idea of spending more time with our kids, that delusion lasts for about three days after school is out for the summer. That's when mom and dad start talking about all the benefits of summer camp. ...

Wanting to believeIt
It seems we just aren’t as religious as we used to be. Just drop by any church on Sunday and check out all the empty pews. Although most people say they attend church regularly, the truth is that only about 30 percent of us show up on Sunday. ...

Small price to pay
Forty years ago the courts ruled that religion had no place in school. Then they said that it wasn’t welcome on public property at Christmas time. And now two federal judges have declared that even in prison religion is unconstitutional. ...

Summer of sadism
Several years ago Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in a movie called ‘Running Man.’ It was a typical action movie with a simplistic plot, wooden acting and far too much violence, but it had one quality that made it an unforgettable movie. It rightly predicted the direction that entertainment would take. ...

Doing the right thing
I barely got this column to my editor on time this week and it’s all because I tried to do the right thing. ...

No big deal
One of the things on my “to-do” list this spring was to fix the screen door on the front porch. The hinge had broken in November and I had taken the door down to fix it. “No big deal,” I told Kathy when I laid it against the wall. “I’ll get to this weekend.” ...

Priceless
A year ago I wrote about my friends Ron and Annie. They were the perfect couple. Ron and I roomed together in college nearly 40 years ago. ...

New tools, two bolts
You know the old saying, “In spring a young man’s thoughts turns toward love.” Well, for us old men spring is when our thoughts turn toward buying new tools. And that is exactly what my friend Steve did last week. ...

Get involved
Well, it looks like spring has finally arrived - and it is none too soon for me. After burning 16 cords of wood - that’s about 32 pickup loads - to keep my house warm all winter, believe me, I am more than ready for spring. ...

Big Love
The one question that I hear most from my readers is where do I get my ideas. "I could never come up with something good to write about every week," they tell me. I'm not sure if they are giving me a compliment for my creativity or a criticism for my lack of it, but I'll assume the former. But the truth is that good story ideas are not that hard to come by. Just watch television or read the newspaper and there are enough weird things happening to write a column every day. ...

Murphy's Law
We Americans love to save time. Why waste two hours cooking a roast dinner when a microwave can cook it in two minutes? Now we can watch Judge Judy instead of spending all our time in a hot kitchen. Television saves us wasting time reading books. Why spend three days reading a book when we can get the same story in two hours on television? Who cares if 'Romeo and Juliet' comes across more like 'The Dukes of Hazzard' after Hollywood gets done with it? ...

All that was needed
It's a long way from San Francisco to the Statehouse in Columbus - 2501 miles and 36 years to be exact. Let me explain. It was the summer of 1970, the summer of peace and love, and what better place for peace and love than San Francisco. So I quit my job, stuck out my thumb and headed west. ...
