Forgive and forget
Every once in a while, whenever I'm feeling
particularly full of self-pity for some real or imagined wrong
done to me, I pull an old newspaper article from my desk drawer
and reread it. It is about an old Oklahoma preacher named Rev.
Wade Watts. A black man, I might add. One evening his phone rang
and a familiar voice on the other end said, "Hello, brother." Now
Rev. Watts said that greeting really surprised him because the
caller was Johnny Lee Clary, a former Imperial Wizard of the ...

Clash of civilizations
The price of gasoline jumped 30 cents over night -
again. Why? The newspaper said it was instability of gas supplies
because of Muslim religious riots in Nigeria. Last week it was the
attack on the oil refinery in Saudi Arabia by Islamic
fundamentalists. And before that it was the Muslin "cartoon rage"
all over Europe. So let me ask the question that I know everyone
in America has been asking since September 11, 2001. Why are the
Muslims so mad at everyone? Or more to the point, what i ...

That's all
Now that the temperature has been below freezing
for a couple weeks in a row, where are all those scientists who
were warning us during the January thaw about global warming? My
guess is they're all on vacation in Florida. Speaking of weather,
why is it that every time there's the least bit of snow on the
ground, every school south of Minneapolis cancels classes? In
fact, one school district even announced it was closing just
because snow was predicted for the next day. My guess is t ...

Machismo
They say the wheels of justice grind slowly, but
they do grind nonetheless. Well, they're grinding down in Texas.
After more than four years of legal wrangling and manipulation,
former Enron bosses Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling are finally
in court this week facing multiple charges of fraud and
conspiracy. Once the golden boys of Houston, Lay and Skilling now
stand accused of repeatedly misleading stockholders, claiming that
all was going well with the company while it was actually ...

A snowball's chance
My wife Kathy and I just celebrated our 29th
anniversary in January. Now I know that doesn't sound like too big
a deal to some of you who have been married for 50 or 60 years,
but from our perspective, it's a really big deal. That's because
no one thought we would ever stay together this long. In fact, all
our friends were literally taking bets that our marriage wouldn't
last longer than a year. It was so bad that even her pastor
wouldn't do the ceremony for us. He said he didn't ...

Scout's honor
I have met the Devil. He is 12 years old, stands
four foot six inches tall and wears a girl scout uniform. "Hello
Mr. Graham. Our Girl Scout troop is selling cookies again this
year and I know how much you love them. Remember last year you
bought sixteen boxes from me? How many boxes would you like this
year?" ...

Tour of the Holy Land IV
When we arrived in Bethlehem that afternoon I was
determined to avoid the peddlers at all costs. Obviously I didn't
need any more of Arafat's scarves. But when we pulled in front of
the Church of the Nativity where Jesus was born, our bus was again
surrounded by peddlers. Determined that I wouldn't be cheated a
third time, I took a deep breath, fixed my eyes on the church
straight ahead and made a run for it. I had just about made it
when one young fellow ran along side me. ...

A virtual holy tour
There's been a lot of bad news this year with the
war in Iraq, hurricane Katrina, the outrageous cost of gasoline,
and now we're hit with a double dose of below-normal temperatures
in December and heating costs that are 30 percent higher than last
year. So I figured we all could use a vacation, and what could be
better than a trip to the Holy Land - the land of faith and
eternal hope. ...

I don't mind
Well, another year has gone by, and if you're like
me, you've already broken your New Year's resolution to get back
on the diet you started last year but only stuck with until the
first weekend of last January. And like me, you've already started
the new year feeling frustrated and guilty about your dieting
failures. Well, I just read something that Erma Bombeck once wrote
that I think might make us all feel better about ourselves, extra
holiday weight and all. She said that we nee ...

So here's my idea
The one thing a woman wants most from a man is what
he can't give her - emotions. A woman can wake up at 5 a.m. and
get all teary over the sunrise that somehow reminds her of a day
20 years ago when she was at band camp and went for a morning walk
with her first boyfriend. A man wakes up at 5 a.m. and cusses at
the dog because he's scratching at the door to go outside to do
his business. ...

What am I missing?
The one thing that drives me nuts about remodeling
our house for the past four years is that nothing is ever put back
in the same place. If I get a screwdriver from the toolbox in the
garage, I leave it in the dining room because I might be working
there the next day. If I get the flashlight from the kitchen
drawer, I leave it in the basement because I might need it to work
on the electrical panel next week. And of course, when I actually
do need to use them, by that time I've totally ...
