WHAT I'VE LEARNED
I remember once reading something that Mark Twain had written. He said when he was 17 he thought his father was an absolute idiot. But by the time he turned 21, he was amazed how much his father had learned in just four short years. ...

LOSING WEIGHT IS EASY DURING FAIR TIME
I just heard we had 23 days this summer with temperatures above 90 degrees. Like a Swedish sauna. That's how one weatherman described our weather these past couple months. ...

DEMOCRACY IS BEING ABLE TO EXPRESS OUR VIEWS
We like to think we live in a free society. After all, this is a democracy. We have the freedom to think and say whatever we want to think and say. Right? ...

THE COST OF CONVENIENCE
I happened to call my pastor in Texas last week. He was pretty influential in my leaving the construction business and entering the ministry, so I've tried to stay in contact with him as best I could over the years. The trouble is that I don't get to Texas as much as I would like and neither one of us is very good at writing letters. He can't find the time and I can never find an envelope or a stamp when I need one. ...

FAITH IS LIKE A GARDEN
Kathy has always wanted to have a garden of her own. Every April she would talk about growing tomatoes and beans and corn and maybe even broccoli. Every May she would tell me how much money she could save us at the grocery store if we could grow our own food. And every August she would tell me "next year we'll do it." ...

FACING ECONOMIC REALITY
I happened to be reading through something I wrote 20 months ago and in the light of today's economic picture, I thought it was worth retelling. Remember the presidential election in 2000? Both parties were arguing about the best way to spend all the money the experts guaranteed us would come from the projected budget surplus. Here is what I wrote on Nov. 5, 2000 about their so-called guarantee. ...

KEEPING RESOLUTIONS
Every so often the YMCA has a sign advertising for new members. "Having trouble keeping your New Year's resolution. We can help." And every year the membership swells with people just like me. You see, I'm an expert at making resolutions. After all, I've made hundreds of them in my lifetime. Sometimes I've made dozens in just one year - usually after a particularly self-indulgent holiday or vacation trip. The problem is I'm lousy at keeping them. ...

NINTH CIRCUIT COURT APPEALS IS NUTS
Let me say right up front that I think the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is nuts. In case you've been on vacation in the Canadian wilderness for the past two weeks and didn't hear about their latest ruling, when a three-member panel of the San Francisco-based court decided to throw out the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, that generated a firestorm of criticism from virtually everyone in the country. ...
